25 Adjust Trawl Prohibited Species Catch Limits for Halibut

Amendment 25 was proposed to eliminate the primary Pacific halibut PSC limit that, when reached, closes Bycatch Limitation Zones 1 and 2H of the Bering Sea.

22 Establish Trawl Gear Test Zones

BSAI Amendment 22, established designated trawl test areas in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands management area. It allows pelagic and bottom trawl fishermen to test and calibrate their fishing gear during closed seasons, reducing economic costs and lost fishing time from gear problems

G27 Establish Trawl Gear Test Zones

This amendment would establish two trawl test areas in the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) and one trawl test area in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands (BSAI) area. Pelagic and bottom trawl fishermen could test their trawl fishing gear in these areas when they would otherwise be closed to trawling. Establishment of these test areas would allow vessel operators the opportunity to test their trawl gear before a season opens so that they could begin fishing efficiently at the beginning of a season.

G26 Permanent Kodiak Crab Protection Zones

The proposed amendment would extend the effective date of regulations implementing time/area closures around Kodiak Island on vessels using trawl gear other than pelagic trawl gear. This action is necessary to protect the habitat of depressed stocks of red king crab and Tanner crab in the Kodiak Island area.

19 Establish Prohibited Species Catch Limits for Non-Trawl Fisheries, Revise Trawl Fishery Categories for Prohibited Species Catch Accounting, Delay Fisheries Start Date, Expand Vessel Incentive Program

These regulations implement FMP amendments which establish 1992 Pacific halibut bycatch limits for trawl and non-trawl gear in the BSAI and authorize regulatory amendments that would provide for in-season time/area closures to further reduce prohibited species bycatch rates. In addition, existing regulations are amended to revise the management and monitoring of prohibited species bycatch amounts and the vessel incentive program to reduce prohibited species bycatch rates.

This amendment established 1992 Pacific halibut bycatch limits for trawl and non-trawl gear in the BSAI. It also authorized regulatory amendments that would provide for in-season time/area closures to further reduce prohibited species bycatch rates. In addition, existing regulations are amended to revise the management and monitoring of prohibited species bycatch amounts and the vessel incentive program to reduce prohibited species bycatch rates.

18 Inshore/Offshoure Allocations for Pollock, Establish Catcher Vessel Operational Area, Designate Western Alaska Community Development Quota for Pollock

Revised Amendment 18 to the FMP established allocations of pollock in the BSAI between inshore and offshore components during the years 1993 through 1995. Also, these regulations revise the catcher vessel operational area established in the BSAI to allow only catcher vessels and motherships to operate during the non-roe season (June 1-December 31). In addition, this rule clarifies regulations that implement portions of Amendment 18 and Amendment 23 to the FMP for Groundfish of the Gulf of Alaska.

G23 Inshore/Offshore Allocations for Pollock

This amendment imposed a temporary moratorium on the entry of new vessels into the groundfish fisheries under Federal jurisdiction in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands (BSAI) management area, the crab fisheries under Federal jurisdiction in the BSAI Area, and the groundfish fisheries under Federal jurisdiction in the Gulf of Alaska.
